I really would like to get some more people chiming in on music they found through this series that you liked.

So far I literally only have Grefter responding, and I kind of knew most of his favourites already.  Would like at least a couple more people given that this is the one year mark.

I don't care if you've only listened to a small percentage of the songs, and the only description you have is "I liked the one week where they sing about pasta"--I'll figure out what song you mean, and will be very grateful for your input :)

I liked the Coldplay song A Sky Full of Starts, even if the video is goofy. Miranda Lambert + Carrie Underwood is good times as well. Panic at the Disco is pretty cool, though. And I discovered mostly what I already knew – which is that I like Beyonce and dislike most other female pop singers.

Trying to go back and listen to some of the stuff. I got behind early on and sheer amount of songs got too intimidating to catch back up on.

Doesn't help that when I did try to catch back up I wound up closing like five songs in a row in the first minute. But I'll try to listen to some and post thoughts today/tomorrow.

Just doing the most recent list of stuff, may go back and do older ones later. As a note I do not watch the videos. Music for me is a thing I put on in the background usually while doing something else. Sitting there and actively watching a music video usually makes any song, even one I would usually like, turn irritating to me very quickly.

Wolf - Shark Attack
This....is not my style of music at all. I just don't care for this kind of metal. I can't really judge it on merits other than that, since well the very style/genre puts me off. D.

Eluveitie - The Call of the Mountains
Link doesn't work for me. <_<
EDIT: With new Grefter link...okay, this is great. The children chorus bit at the end isn't something I care for much, but the rest of the song was fantastic. Would be an A without that bit, is a B+ with it.

Gus G - Blame it on Me
This is more my style of "metal" if this even counts as metal? It feels more like the power ballad style of music, I guess. Still, enjoyed this. B-

Darkest Hour - The Misery We Make
Once again, not my style but not as offensive as Shark Attack. When he wasn't screaming it was fun! Enough to give it a C.

Henry - Fantastic (String Quartet Version)
I kinda unfairly compare all string stuff I hear these days to David Garret. So...good, but I can't stop thinking "well, it's no David Garret". C

Bars and Melody - Hopeful
Decent, enough. Jenna would like this I think, but not something I'd listen to on a playlist. Still, not a song I'd skip if it came up on pandora. C+

Best of the finalists would be "Blame it on Me", though...none of them are really my style of music.
EDIT: Call of the Mountains takes the lead once I could listen to it, and is the only one I'd prolly grab to listen to on my own. Will toss at Jenna and see if she likes it enough to look into this artist.

Working my way backwards through the "finalist" lists, since the full notes are just too big.

Lily Allen - As Long As I Got You
I like Lily Allen normally, but this one wasn't that great I think. C+ I guess? The 30 seconds of chatter with no music intro didn't help my opinion, certainly.

Henry - Fantastic
It's alright. Takes awhile to get good, but a little bit before the 2 minute mark when the violins start up in earnest it picks up. C+ again. Passable, nothing I'd throw on a playlist.

Weird Al - Tacky
Not as good as Happy, but still funny and pretty good. B+ material definately.

CROBOT - Nowhere to Hide
It's not bad, but I managed to completely space out while listening to it. That...probably says something. Not sure what to give it.

Tony Bennet & Lady Gaga - Anything Goes
Not a jazz fan, I spaced out through this one too but I'm at least very certain why. I just find most jazz boring. D

Meghan Trainor - All About That Bass
Jenna's been listening to this one alot lately. I find it annoying at best and outright grating at worst. F.

As a note, I am in fact NOT "all about that bass", in general the less bass a song has the better for me. Really heavy bass makes me queasy to the point where we deliberately had the baseline tuned down in the car radio for years(now Jenna just uses her iphone for music).  I can listen to some heavy bass songs(Addicted to Bass that Gref linked is actually pretty good), I just have to turn the volume down on them.

For this week, Tacky > Henry > stuff. A bit disappointed in that Lily Allen song, but she does have a lot of misses for me as well so I'm not too surprised.

The retrospective stuff is in good shape now, and I think I can start writing that section even.  Thanks everyone :)

In the mean time, I have some finalists for this week.  This part is just the normal weekly song, so it doesn't need input from 5+ people (but anyone who wants to comment on these songs is of course welcome to do so):

Welp, here's the retrospective part written anyhow (obviously html links aren't enabled on the forum--those should work in html form though).  Now to think about choosing music for this week....... >_>

Song of the week has now officially been running for one year.  Let's take a look back at the past year, shall we?

Last week, I asked people to mention some songs they'd heard through song of the week that they particularly liked or found particularly memorable.  Of course, people remember the most recent stuff first (I don't think anyone mentioned a song from the 2013 era).  That said, I do remember <a href='http://www.rpgdl.com/KSotW/index.php?week=20131010'>Red Shoes by IU</a> getting a particularly warm reception back in October.

That said, someone did mention the very first song from 2014 as their favourite.  My brother in law still quite enjoys <a href='http://www.rpgdl.com/KSotW/index.php?week=20140102'>Goodbye, Goodbye by Teegan and Sarah</a> featured back in January.  Although...he did help pick that one out.  Later that same month, <a href='http://www.rpgdl.com/KSotW/index.php?week=20140123'>How Could I want More by Jamie Lynn Spears</a> has a fan (perhaps partially due to the Britney Spears connection).

Of course, all of these songs were back when this was just an email series to family.  In the last week of January I would start putting this on the web.  And I picked up my efforts a little--made sure to listen to a wider range of music, got second opinions on my choices.  Surely, this would raise the quality of my music choices yes?

Moving on chronologically, the next song that got mentioned was from April, <a href='http://www.rpgdl.com/KSotW/index.php?week=20140424'>Shatter Me by Lindsey Stirling and Lzzy Hale</a>.  Which...I have to admit, the overall quality of this song still strikes me as exceptionally high.  I wish I could find songs with this level of vocal performance and this level of instrument performance every week.

Next up, from May there is...not so much a song, but a music video.  Interestingly the only video to be called out specifically when people were telling me about their favourites.  Now, pause and think--what band would be remembered for their music video?  If you guessed OK Go, you'd be wrong.  The band remembered for its video is...<a href='http://www.rpgdl.com/KSotW/index.php?week=20140529'>Equilibrium, with their song Wirsthaus Gaudi</a>.

If there's one lesson I keep learning whenever I ask people for feedback, it's that I don't choose country songs nearly enough.  There were four songs sent out in June, but the only one called out as someone's favourite was the country song--<a href='http://www.rpgdl.com/KSotW/index.php?week=20140626'>Somethin' Bad by Miranda Lambert and Carrie Underwood</a>.

Once we get into July of this year, NOW people's memories start kicking in.  Four out of the five songs in this month got a mention by someone.  First up <a href='http://www.rpgdl.com/KSotW/index.php?week=20140703'>URL Badman by Lily Allen</a> got a mention.  (Good thing someone likes her--she is my most chosen artist this year with 3 songs throughout the year.  Incidentally?  The other artists that I chose more than once?  Nobody mentioned a Lady Gaga, or Pentatonix, or Eminem song, hmmm...).  Later in July is <a href='http://www.rpgdl.com/KSotW/index.php?week=20140717'>Freshman Song by 풋풋</a>, which is a song I had skipped over earlier in the year, but somehow became Casey's favourite song.  Next, <a href='http://www.rpgdl.com/KSotW/index.php?week=20140724'>Oblivion by Bastille</a> was called out as a particularly quality track.

Finally <a href='http://www.rpgdl.com/KSotW/index.php?week=20140731'>All About That Bass by Meghan Trainor</a> was perhaps the most divisive of songs, with some liking it for its message, and some people who could just not stand it.  From what I've seen, this division seems to come pretty much along gender lines.  And this is actually a pretty funny recurring theme with me--I seem to be comically bad at imagining things from a male perspective.  I'll show a song to Casey, and he'll be like "I don't think I'm the target audience", and I'll be like "Wait, really?  It's just an 'I don't need a man' song.  Why would you not be the targe...oh. OH.  Right."

But wait, there's more.  You see, before I make my decision, I list out the songs I'm considering, and people have a few favourites that didn't make the final cut for one reason or another.  Among them..."War Eternal" by Arch Enemy, "All the Devil's Toys" by Deathstars, "A Sky Full of Stars" by Coldplay, "Tacky" by Weird Al, and just in general the artists Beyonce and Panic! At the Disco (who have yet to be chosen...in fact, I really should choose them sometime).

진호현 - Forget me Not

This is very very manufactured dudewithguitar stuff.  Uses your standard pop chords and is super polished.  This is why I don't like it as much as Freshman Song.

Daddy's Grove & Cryogenix - Blackout

This would be my pick of the week because it hearkens back to a simpler time of electronic music for me.  It is straight from the early 2000s musically and the film clip is exactly as generic as a ton of electronic stuff from back then.  Here is some generic CG stuff happening wooo!

David Guetta - Lovers on the Sun

The film clip is a fun bit of messing around on top of a consumer friendly track.  I think it is boring as song.  Not bad.  Not great.  Its just a song.  I think the film clip should have her turning their pants into booty shorts like she is wearing and melting their guns.

Pentatonix - Problem

This is probably the worst Pentatonix song I have heard.  It isn't as good as the original Ariana Grande version and they have pretty much either covered great things or improved tracks.  It is the first time they haven't improved a song that wasn't like a masterpiece already.

Mako - Our Story

This is kind of generic upbeat anthem stuff.  It is better than the David Guetta track though!   I just was hoping more for it in the first 30 seconds before it just was oh this is just a build to an anthem.  Okay.  It is fine!  I just was hoping for more.

Iggy Azlea - Black Widow

I don't like the beat, some of the lyric choices don't feel quite as aggressive as I expect during delivery.  The film clip is an homage to Kill Bill which feels really weird, because Kill Bill is a series of homages to a bunch of things.  As far as it goes... it is a pretty cheap homage.  The Bruce Lee outfits are the wrong colour and are just like lycra or something.

So eh.

Let's see if I can put the longer notes into a code block or something so they are not massive.

Code: [Select]
General guide to the letter grades:

D = didn't finish
C = played once
C+ = played 2-3 times
B- = played 5ish times (min 4)
B = played 10ish times
B+ = played a bunch, I lost count
A = something I felt the need to flag as a good pick for some reason.  I don't use this very often anymore.

As a note, I'm only listening to things once(if that), but I'm picking with your letter grades based on whether or not I think I would listen to it regularly or not.

진호현 - Forget me Not
Lost interest halfway through. D.

Daddy's Grove & Cryogenix - Blackout
Solidish, could see this going on one of Jenna's techno lists. Not something I'd pay overly much attention to though, C+

David Guetta - Lovers on the Sun
Another decent one, though nothing amazing. B- probably. It is just a solid song.

Pentatonix - Problem
This was mildly annoying. Stopped the song a bit over halfway through. D.

Mako - Our Story
Good tunes, okay singing? Prolly comes in at a C+, I'd listen to it a few times.

Iggy Azlea - Black Widow
Takes almost 2 minutes for the song to START? No. Do not do shit like this. Otherwise, song is good when she's actually singing, but the rap parts are terrible. I let the song finish, so C I guess. But more because that was the last song than any desire to hear the whole thing.

Lovers on the Sun gets pick of the week for me, I suppose.

EDIT: ooh, wish I'd seen Gate's opinions earlier.  I thought the David Guetta was a decent pick, but Grefter wasn't a fan, so I went with the mako pick.

So...my sister requested Taylor Swift this week, and it happens to be brand new this week.  That's a pretty decent reason to pick it.

Buuuuuut there's also a Where's Waldo themed music video, and Where's Waldo is awesome!  What to pick??

The finalists...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lt0XEZyedZM
Henry (Bounce)

Henry (Bounce)

Like a minute of final song and 2 minutes of establishing a loop, but whatever, it is a fun loop and I do actually really dig people playing with effects pedals to make a track with standard instrumentation (like Ed Alleyne-Johnson does with a violin) or just general playing with looped samples to construct a track (like Ministry does sometimes).  It is pretty slick and simplistic, but eh, it is that kind of trick done in a pop style.  I actually prefer this to last week's string version of a track he did.

Lindsey Stirling (Master of Tides)

Huh.  This is unexpected.  I don't actually have much to say about this.  It doesn't feel like a huge stretch for her really?  I would have liked more Dubstep to it really.  It is a nice track, but doesn't blow me away quite like Shatter Me and then the subsequent tracks of hers when I went youtube diving after hearing it.

The film clip feels a bit hollow?  Recording of a live performance of a recorded set that has been produced?  I am pretty sure being there would have been pretty rad.  It does have pirates with flamethrowers though, so that is pretty boss.

Orange Caramel (My Copycat)

This is not a smart song.  I like this song a bit.  The film clip helps it a lot though.  The wardrobe in this is pretty great.  It is a bunch of bright colourful outfits, not all are good, but there is more good thann bad here.  Pair that up with a bright poppy track with a horn and then add in random Where's Wally reference (with very cool female variations on the costuming) and this one actually is a pretty good pick.

Kawehi (Anthem)

Ooooookay, see those things I said about Henry?  I take it back and it all belongs here instead.  Thiiiiiiis is fucking cool with a cool film clip.  Bonus points for Background Vox and the way the boxes turn off when they aren't functioning.

Also

Quote
I realized after we finished recording the EP that all of the songs were about a Robot stealing peoples hearts and about questioning the worth of the human race as a whole.

Holy shit I need to get this EP.

Taylor Swift (Shake It Off)

So... at least in the film clip it looks like she is essentially responding to other female pop vocalists that dislike her? (Presumably for being craaaazy manufactured and squeaky clean these days?)  Or is it speaking to them to say to ignore the haters etc etc?  I can't tell.  I assume the former, which if it is, calling out Lilly Allen is a losing battle there because hoooooly shit does Hard Out Here blow this out of the water as a poppy dis track.

So while I say all that, I need to note even while that thematically it makes me think of Jay-Z - Dirt Off Your Shoulder and by title association it reminds me of Florence + The Machine - Shake It Out, both of which eclipse it completely,  I am not the target audience here.  I really can't be remotely fair to this song.

If it isn't supposed to be calling out others then... I don't really know what is going on all the time.

Tove Lo (Not On Drugs)
This is okay.  Not great.  Not bad.  It is super listenable, but I don't have much to say about it.

Yeah, not quite sure what to say about this one.  Kept thinking "I will cut this from my top six" and then I kept liking it more than other songs, including some of the other finalists.  Like...it's somehow both good and I have nothing to say about it.

Incidentally, the ordering I had purely for how much I liked to listen to them while I worked (although they were all decently close and this order changed regularly)

1. Master of Tides
2. Bounce
3. My Copycat
4. Not on Drugs
5. Anthem
6. Shake it Off

An interesting note about Anthem--Grefter calls out liking it in part because it is bass heavy, and he really likes bass.  I barely even notice the bass in the song.  An interesting statistic I heard (through word of mouth) was that women are apparently more attuned to higher pitched sounds, whereas men are more attuned to deeper sounds.  (With the supposed reasoning being women "need to hear crying babies" or something).  I don't know how seriously I should take this statistic (and I especially don't know how seriously I should take the "explanation") but Grefter and I do seem to match expectations.

The full note vomit:

General guide to the letter grades:

D = didn't finish
C = played once
C+ = played 2-3 times
B- = played 5ish times (min 4)
B = played 10ish times
B+ = played a bunch, I lost count
A = something I felt the need to flag as a good pick for some reason.  I don't use this very often anymore.

Scar Symmetry - Limits to Infinity

Growling metal about sci fi dystopias from Nuclear Blast?  This is a running theme I can get behind.

This is pretty good modern metal.  I don't think it is mega innovative or anything, but it is pretty good.  I don't have much to say for the lyrics video, but its functional and probably helps with the target audience for what you talk about considering the type of music.

Bonus points for the use of "lemniscate" because I applaud any metal tack that gets me looking up a word and "As below - so above is the phrase that you seek " being a great lyric.

Cobra Starship ft. Icona Pop - Never Been In Love

I can't shake the feeling that I have heard this before.  I think it might be simila to another Cobra Starship song I have heard only a few times.  It is pretty good though!  It is a prety tight little simple pop song, there isn't much to it, but it doesn't need much to work.

Edit - See this was the pick.  It is a good pick!

Jessie J, Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj - Bang Bang

This on the other hand instrumentally feels way too sparse.  There is just a kind of boring beat that does build slowly over the song, but never feels full enough to support the vocals.  For 90% it is a Look At My Range vocal gymnastics song for Jessie J and Ariana (who are both good at it I suppose) but is not something I am a fan of, so am not the target audience.  Nicki Minaj  kicks in way too late in to the song for a single verse and kind of nails it.  It is a damn good verse.

Video wise, the wardrobe is pretty aggressive all around.  It isn't my kind of style, but it is well put together in that style.  I would also recommend avoiding the comments because of it (for all that goes without saying, I still look).

STRIKER - City Of Gold

This is more of that cool old school style metal that you keep finding.  It is a good time to be a Maiden or Priest fan!  I hope VSM is paying attention to this kind of stuff as it comes up.  I think this is one of the higher quality tracks of this style you have linked as well.  It is a well written song and the lyrics keep moving along pretty well only really getting repetative in the chorus.  I dig this a lot, but not as much as I dig the lyrics clip.

The clip is like someone has taken a D&D picture and turned it into a little mini motion comic.  It is wicked and I love it.  Excal/10.

BLUES PILLS - Gypsy

Oooooooooh my god I am typing this JUST as I clicked go.  THIS IS THE BEST TRACK.  THE BEST.  It is classic 60s rock style.  Has steel guitar.  One minute in and I am still confident in this being the track of the week and I am going to link to family as well.  2 minutes in you hit the solo and the film clip goes full on acid trip.  YES YES YES YES YES.  Can you feel that bass line?  That is sex for my ears.  Song finished.  Still the best.  End to end, best song of the week.

Sooooo I need to buy this album.

And here I was clicking into it expecting to make a joke about Blue's Clues.

Shame I went to bed before seeing Grefters, oh well.

Ordering was constantly shifting, but as I was heading home looked something like...

Cobra Starship>Jessie J>Striker=Scar Symmetry>Blues Pills

(And there was a fifth song that was so consistently last among the finalists that I was like...fuck it, only five finalists.  Union J I think was my sixth finalist before I dropped it?)

Matty B

(And the sixth finalist which I don't plan on picking because it's too close to the Mako track a few weeks ago but I'm thinking not as good as the Mako track is Arston: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KucpZRh0uFo )

Running late with work.  Not sure if will make it home in time to talk.  Will edit in responses though.

Super Junior - Mamcita
Okas to this opens on a kind of cool rock riff.  Then it changes to busts out some lounge horns.  It isn't any of these thing after that.  It is fairly standardish boy band format singing chorus over a basic beat, throw in the one that does a rap chorus.  Competent at it and here is a loooot of them to put it together.  Bonus points for one of the guys looking like Lee from Tekken.

Asking Alexandria - Moving On

Huh.  This s kind of more interesting to me personally than something I really like.  It like a blend of 80s ballad and Load/Reload era Metallica.  I like both of those things for different reasons.  It uses plenty of the song structure from ballads, but is no where near the industrial grade cheese that those end to be all about (which is what I love about them).  I takes that and layers on something in the vocal range of Metallica with something damn close to the theme of those albums.

Its really well done and could totally see that being a thing.  The comments are kind of losing their shit at a previously heavy band going back to some rock roots claming it to be selling out, but holy fuck they haven't looked at charts in the last decade and a half.  It is has been a long time since pumping out a "generic" rock song has got you fucking anywhere.  It stands out.

Dara cu INNA Antonia si Carla's Dreams - Fie ce-o fi
You know how I talk about liking songs that aren't smart?  I like this song.  It's song construction is pretty basic.  Romanian (?) I don't have nearly anything close to even a real concept of to begin to pretend to understand it, so I can't speak for more than how it sounds, but meh.  I kind of assume the vocals are cleaned up a bit because it is a pop track, but there is nothing there that sounds like it wouldn't be very very deliverable.

I really really dig the film clip.  It again is simple, but its nice.  Flapper outfits while not classy have continued to be visually distinct and appealing.

Royal Pirates - Love Toxic

Whoa whoa regular K-Pop where they are showing the band playing instruments that aren't classical instruments?  WHAT DARK WIZARDRY IS THIS.  I really dig this.  The bit at 1:31 is fucking rad.  This is probably my favourite.

Matty B

I can't really comment, not the target audience.  You have hit one of these twice now and your overwhelming positivity is really very you, but I just can't do these >_>

Hm, cool, I was actually listening more to the Royal Pirates track towards the end of the week, but I didn't feel particuarly strongly about any of these so I wanted a second oppinion.  Picking/writing about now.

It is really quite a well produced track all throughout.  Again it isn't super deep (shallow pickings this week, but we can't all be weeks where Lily Allen puts out a track), but it is a solid dancable pop track.

Well I already got a positive response to it (from my mom) so that already puts it above average for audience response.

And yeah, I agree the pickings felt kind-of thin this week; I blame the long weekend.  Seemed like America produced fuck all this week.  (And I have empirical evidence to back it up this theory--less than 60 videos showed up on my feed, even though the feed this week was actually 8 days instead of 7 because I wanted a few more options).

I forget my full internal ordering, but I think the top three just to listen to while working were Royal Pirates > Daru Cu Inna > Asking Alexandria.  Or maybe Matty B was third.
