Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones (FE8)

Fire Emblem 8! Because I'm going crazy and need stuff to keep me from realizing it.

-Levels are taken at 20 (unpromoted)/12 (promoted) (or 10/20/12, for the trainees) for everyone except Myrrh, who is 20/0 (no promoted class). I believe this is more reflective of endgame than 20/15 (as the last few map's enemies aren't really capable of supporting a full party of 8-12 PCs getting to 20/15). Stats are "averages" ala FE7's stat topic that I obtained from here http://eaichu250.superbusnet.com/DT/fea.php?&game=8e

-The original 20/15 thread. http://www.rpgdl.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3445

-Stats: Most of this grabbed from NEB/Snow.
HP  = Lose these and you are PERMANENTLY DEAD AND CAN NEVER COME BACK.
POW = Adds a point to damage dealt. Is referred to in-game as Strength or Magic, as applicable.
SKL = Each point is worth +2 to Accuracy and +0.5 to critical rate. Note that I haven't provided HIT or CRIT stats, though I will indicate how to work 'em out.
SPD = Each point is worth +2 to Evade. More importantly, this governs double-actions both by the character and by the enemy, in-game. How you want to interpret this stat in the DL is up to you.
DEF = Reduces physical damage taken.
RES = Reduces magical damage taken. Also, each point of RES reduces status accuracy against the character by 5%, not counting ID.
LUC = Luck. Is worth +0.5 to Accuracy, +1 to Evade, and +1 to Critical Evade (i.e. % reduction to enemy's crit rate).
CON = Consitution. If a character equips a weapon with Weight greater than his or her Constitution, he or she takes an AS penalty (and thus also loses 2 Evade) for every point the Weight exceeds the CON. Weapon weights will be provided below.
AS  = Attack Speed. See above. This is the effective Speed of the character. If two characters in a combat differ by an Attack Speed of four or more, the faster character gets a second attack (must be the same attack as the first) after any counter resolves for the first.
DMG = POW + *MT - 10 (8 for magic). I've assumed 10 for enemy endgame defence (and 8 for Res). This is the damage a character does with a single swing, assuming they do not critical.

Derived stats:
HIT  = SKL*2 + LUC*.5 + Weapon Hit rate. This determines the chance of an attack to hit an enemy. Endgame enemy averae Avoid is about 15, so this stat is primarily used to figure out whose accuracy tanks first and worst when faced with good evade.
AVD  = AS*2 + LUC. Used (against 125 enemy HIT) to figure out EVade% below.
EV%  = Evade%. The actual percentage chance for a character to dodge. Basically, FE biases things so that high evade characters dodge more, and low evade characters dodge less than the numbers would imply. Note that Evade% is taken against an enemy HIT of 125, like for FE7.
CRIT = SKL/2 + Wpn crit rate. Critical hits are 3x damage (after defense), and shake the screen with their terrible power. The base crit rate is reduced by 5 (average enemy luck, favoring bosses) to give the % chance of a critical hit occurring.

Phys durability: How durable a character is to physical attacks that deal 40% PCHP (17.19) damage to an average PC. HP is already factored into this.
Mag durability: Same as above, except with magic attacks.

-Quick calculations for the lazy like me:
Killer weapons are -4 dmg, -5 Hit, and +30% Crit.
Javelins/Hand Axes are -8 dmg, -10 Hit, but ranged.
Elfire is +2 damage, -5 Crit, and +5 Hit compared to Thunder... but comes with an AS penalty almost by default.
Fire is -4 dmg, -5 Crit, and +5 Hit compared to Thunder.

- Weapon levels were taken at 'S' for starting, 'A' for not-starting. Exceptions were Great Knights/Paladins who start with both swords and lances.

- Art is uneven because the official art favors some odd folk.

-Averages up top!

*** Myrrh's defenses shave off more than 40% PCHP, so sclaing subtraction defense to 40% damage results in her having infinite durability.
Note 1: Myrrh's big thing is she only has 50 shots of her weapon before it runs out and she has nothing at all. Take that as you will (I'd give her 8-10 shots of it in a DL fight. YMMV)
Note 2: Myrrh is flying typed, so she has the usual 3x wpn mgt weakness to bows.

Yay! Awesome, this was due to be ported over.

Couple additions:

Level 12 Myrrh. For a variety of reasons I feel this is more fair than Level 20. Included on this list is an objection to leaving everyone else much further from their potential than she is, the fact that she needs massive kill favouritism to gain that many levels in so short a time (granted, no different from Nino, but the other issues compound this), and the fact that getting her to max level without killfeeding tends to nuke almost all of her weapon, which I assume would have to at least last her a full season in the DL.

She's not rankable anyway so I mostly do this for the effect on the averages.

Myrrh: Cute Dragon Girl (Manakete)
HP: 29.3  Pow: 24.9  Skl: 22.3  Spd: 12.1  Def: 33.3  Res: 30.3  Lck: 6.3  Con: 5
Phys durability: ***   Mag Durability: ***   Evade: 0.6%
Dragon Stone: 30.9 dmg, 147.75 Hit, 12.1 AS (-8.2), 21.15% Crit. +32 damage vs. Monsters.
*** Myrrh's defenses shave off more than 40% PCHP, so sclaing subtraction defense to 40% damage results in her having infinite durability. (Actually her magic durability is now finite, just over 10x or so.)
Note 1: Myrrh's big thing is she only has 50 shots of her weapon before it runs out and she has nothing at all. Take that as you will. (Elfboy says she runs out before she crits, but isn't sure when that happens.)
Note 2: Myrrh is flying typed, so she has the usual 3x wpn mgt weakness to bows.

This version of Myrrh lowers averages as follows: HP by 0.33, Damage/Pow/Skl by 0.21, Hit by 0.46, AS/Spd by 0.16, Def by 0.05, Res by 0.08, Evade by 0.55.

Nosferatu: As far as I'm concerned, Ewan and Knoll should definitely be equipped with this by default, as it is their best weapon in the vast majority of circumstances (draining owns). This raises average damage by 0.16, lowers Hit by 0.63, lowers AS by 0.38, and lowers evade by 0.75.

Other

Enemy Res is exactly the same as enemy Def on average, I'm nearly certain (or some fraction of a point anyway). This isn't FE9-10. As such I currently feel the mages are slightly inflated, but I need to doublecheck this before I actually bother to do any stat work on it.

I don't think all the weapons currently on that list are actually storebought in ordinary stores (mostly the armour- and horse-slayer type weapons aren't, I think). Need to doublecheck this.

New averages!

HP: 42.65
Pow: 20.78
Skl: 19.79
Spd: 20.82
Def: 14.33
Res: 14.28
Lck: 16.27
Con: 9.91
AS: 20.26
Evade%: 24.15
Hit: 129.54
Damage (Silver weapons, no crits factored in): 24.16
Damage (Killer weapons where applicable, crits factored in): 34.2~

Yay Pyro, regardless of my nitpicking. <_<

Thanks for the opinion on Nosferatu (I had debated that, as well as Fire vs. Thunder for Lute. Really the only AS things that matter for the cast, I think?). I'll go back and change my numbers, since I agree with you on this. Just as added info, I included Tana/Vanessa/Marisa with killer weapons for the AS average, so if you default them to Silver thats a -3/32 for the AS average right there (and a little evade too). I tend to think they want that precious evade over the more dependable but less painful silver weapons (since they double, they can very quickly take advantage of the Killer's big advantage, whereas someone like RENNAC can't <_<). Any opinions on Weapon levels being taken at S starting/ A secondary?

I collected a fairly large list of enemies and got the Res and Def values, which averaged out to 8 and 10, which seemed right to me (mage enemies are generally less represented than physical enemies, and the mage enemies tend not to have a greater difference between Res and Def than physical enemies do Def and Res, compare a Druid with 5/10 to a General with 16/6, or compare Gorgons  ~6/13 to a Cyclops' ~15/2 ).

I have to disagree on Myrrh, though. The "difference from potential" bit is silly. Its like saying Sothe should be taken at 15/0 in FE9 because he can't promote. We take levels at endgame. Endgame in FE8 is 10ish (I took 12), except for Myrrh who is 20 at endgame (assuming you use her on the same scale as you use other units). She levels as an unpromoted unit (slightly better than most, actually. The Level*3 subtraction from her exp gain is only a level*2). Getting her to Lvl 20/0 is fairly trivial. Being a flying unit lets her go where she wants on all but 2 of the maps you have her for, so you can bypass the hard outer shell of the enemy Heros/Warriors and hit the soft gooey mages. OHKOing a healthy amount of units from right out of the gate makes it all the more easy (notably, all mages and anything stupid enough to have the "Monster" attribute in FE8, which is everything at endgame). I'll leave the weapon debate alone, but using her on the last few maps = very, very easy 20. The scrubby Skeletons give her 80-100 exp at level 15, so yeah. Its a matter of equal exp vs. equal level (not equal, really. 12/0 is 20 levels below 20/12). As for the comparison to Nino, Nino has to get to 20... and then go through 15 promoted levels to get her on par with other units. And she doesn't get that exp bonus. Or hit a weakness for massive damage on everything on 3 of her maps.

Hmm. Admittedly I pulled these numbers from the final chapter, which lacks Cyclopes, but yeah. Cyclopes are barely in the game anyway (at least Gwyllgis are common in the Ruins...), so I don't really care that they're not represented.

17x Wight, 9/8
8x Gorgon, 8/19
3x Elder Bael, 15/9
2x Wight Archer, 8/8
2x Gwyllgi, 10/8
1x Maelduin, 12/8

Averages: 9.39 Def, 10.76 Res

<_< Yeah I'm thinking they should be equal. Last level has a freakish number of Gorgons which explains the difference, granted (though not a single Archmogall until reinforcements arrive, ditto Deathgoyles... those should cancel though?). IIRC Last Hope (final humans) was also completely balanced though. Similar situation to FE7 promoted enemies. Don't have a file to check, but FE8 has well-documented randoms so I can dig up the resources if it's really needed.

S starting / A secondary generally seems fine? Never sure how I feel about A secondary, so I'm always content to leave that up to the stat topic maker. <_<

I can't imagine we'll come to any agreement on Myrrh, but...

Quote
Its like saying Sothe should be taken at 15/0 in FE9 because he can't promote.

If Sothe joined at Chapter 23 or something like that I'd agree with that. Myrrh felt balanced to be levelled alongside your promoted units, with her obnoxious weapon balancing out the fact that other units gain less exp. (Myrrh would be utterly godawful if she gained exp as a promoted unit).

FE8's endgame level is in general such a point of debate that I'd really rather it didn't affect a PC more than necessary, to boot. I made it at 15 because that was the agreed-upon level at the time (I had quite a few clamouring for 20/20. I don't agree with this at all, but the fact that the clamour was there is noteworthy). 12 works too! I don't really care. But if you fix Myrrh at 20 then she varies wildly with endgame level, whereas if you set her level with the rest then she doesn't fluctuate as much (higher levels give her more offence, lower more durability?). Though haha Myrrh not fluctuating regardless, maybe this point is moot.

It's worth noting she was put in NR and board tournaments as a Heavy and I don't recall much argument for her to be higher and she certainly didn't champ anything. I think with the eight level boost she's Godlike? So additionally it seems unreflective of how people generally see her. (I could also point at her hovering around the lower tiers in FE8 debates but the correlation between in-game use and DL worth for FE is already pathetic, yay FE9's top four combat PCs in the current tier list being Lights or Middles?)

Right, final map had a lot of gorgons (group with Lyon being the big ones) Second to last map (Darkling woods) had a disproportionate physical side, though. Incidentally, Wights generally have 2 Def higher than Res. That and the fact that only two (low frequency) enemy units on Last Hope had better Res than Def was what gave me the numbers I got (and the *numerous* reinforcements on those maps are of the physical-leaning variety). That was the source of our differences, I suspect. I don't feel particularly strongly about this, since I just saw the averages I got and worked with them. If they are wrong I will fix them.

Took 20/12 because 20/15 isn't really attainable on 8-12 PCs without significant and explicit powerlevelling. (20/20 is really rather silly. As well as take 99 for FF6 while you're at it). Taking it at 20/20 would also reflect unfairly on endgame bosses (Lyon only, really, but he sure as heck shouldn't be scaled to 20/20, and 20/15 is definitely on the high side for your 12 units as a whole there).

No, we really won't come to an agreement on Myrrh. In-game character rankings should not matter for DL worth (this is oh-so-very painfully demonstrated elsewhere.) That she was used as a Heavy in NR is hardly a reason to dock her 8 levels (and she can be a Heavy just fine. Status and ID and all the different evade gimmicks nail her pretty well, as well as sufficiently durable healers. To say nothing of ITD). Just... Myrrh at 12/0 when say, Syrene gets 20/12 is silly at face value. She gets 10x as much exp as units at that level. Its like Astrid but on crack. If you want to punish her for her weapon do it on the charges.

But we'll just have to agree to disagree and be done with it. Likely best to just drop this here. Numbers are right there for anyone to use, which is what a stat topic is for (I'm not redoing all those durabilities, though...) Thanks for all the input (and sorry if you or Snow feel I pre-empted you here. Was getting my FE fix while waiting for FE10 and figured I'd go for broke). Should have gotten more comprehensive boss notes, in retrospect.

Oh no, I don't feel pre-empted at all, and you did a good job of it.

Yeah redoing durabilities isn't too important anyway, I can calc the general effect if need be (probably adds 0.01 to everyone or something similar due to HP, defence difference is negligible). And there's a reason both are posted. I could edit the other Myrrh into the main topic to be side-by-side if you want, or leave it as is, I don't care.
