*sigh*

I have been holding out and waiting as long as I could to try to stave this off, but unfortunately, I am going to have to cancel.  We've had several issues pop up that are financially painful (cat broke her hip, other family members had medical issues we needed to help with, etc.).  Not like we're going under or anything, but elective experiences basically need to be cut now.  I am very sad about this :(  Hopefully someone has Skype on so I can at least do some distance communication with people.

Again, sorry for the late notice, but I was really trying to make it work.  Unfortunately, I don't think it will.

Blah.

You know, I barely get to watch any shows I like anymore.  So, let's review some of the shit I have been watching (and some good stuff).

Carrie Diaries - Oh god.  Yeah, remember when I said Sex and the City 2 was bad?  Yeah.  Uh...the lead does look a lot like Carrie, but shit man.  It does not work as a prequel for the series.  Too teen drama.  Boring, honestly.  It still has some of the awesome ridiculous moments ("SPREAD YOUR VAGINA!"), but is overall a teen drama.

Pretty Little Liars - HAH.  AHAHAHAHAHAHA.  Oh god this show.  So, it's based on a young adult book series.  And it is so ridiculously out there.  I swear, the "villain" is a fucking wizard.  I can't take this show seriously, and yet it is ALL drama.  OF COURSE it's popular with that demographic.  The story is ridiculous, and definitely something an immature child would come up with.  Just...awful.  It's like Degrassi where the ENTIRE purpose is seeing people unhappy.  Just bad.

House Hunters Everything - FUCK THIS SHOW AND ANYTHING RELATED TO IT.  Just...argh.  How does it go for so many episodes but Arrested Development, Pushing Daisies...much better shows are canceled?  I swear, it's scenery porn at its finest.  I don't ever get an erection while watching it.  So fucking bad.

Hart of Dixie - So promising to start out with.  I was REALLY hoping they'd go with a different medical drama...but that premise got dropped to turn it into a regular TV show about a girl and a town's misadventures...IN THE SOUTH.  It had a lot of potential in the first season, and it feels like they gave up to write something easier.  At least it is somewhat entertaining.

Glee - I like Glee.  But damn it goes back and forth.  Some episodes are great, some are offensive.  I feel like the storylines don't go anywhere, and it's hard to suspend disbelief.  My biggest issue is...well, they try to be both ridiculously off-kilter AND srsbsns.  Seriously, report Sue to the FBI.  CHRIST.

Smash - This is...the best show on TV right now.  It is excellent.  I love the music, the drama is balanced, there's smart humor.  Also, one of the STRONGEST pilots EVER.  A lot of places said it started to crash after that...but it's excellent still.  Original songs are amazing, and I would totally see either Bombshell or Hitlist on Broadway without hesitation.  Just so adult, but BALANCES it all very well.

Archer - Also great as always.  So behind on it though.  Still, good show.  Funny as hell, and everyone should watch it.  Current season seems like it's going for more standalone episodes, which is not necessarily a bad thing.

Hey, I see these.

Transformers Live Action: Watched the whole series.  While not faithful to the original series, it's good if you ignore a lot of that.  Also, ignore a LOT of the excess stuff.  Revenge of the Fallen is the worst about it (seriously, cut out about 60 minutes of extra crap, movie doesn't change at all), but is probably my favorite of the 3.  Still, I could do without Wheelie humping Mikaela's leg...let me do it instead!

Ahem.

Anyway, overall, it's good.  Lots of action, and the storyline is generally nothing special (with the exception of Jesus Robots in Revenge of the Fallen...ugh so stupid), but overall enjoyable as a series.

Life of Pi: Decent movie.  Pretty faithful adaptation of the book, minus a few points.  But streamlined things well.  Overall liked it - not my favorite movie, but doesn't do anything bad.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower: Really good.  Definitely the best one I've seen this year so far.  Really love its pretty realistic portrayals of things.  Also, go Pittsburgh, yeah yeah.  Just a great movie.

Think I saw more, but that's all I remember for now.

I am graduating from college in two months.  Too bad the degree doesn't come with a shiny, high paying job attached.

Very few actually do.

I got bored with my awesome low-stress private tutoring gig and decided to pick up a second job at something easy, like hotel work. I applied to three hotels and got three job offers. Also, while all of this was going on, I was randomly contacted by a new Tutoring business in the area which offered better hours, better pay, better student:teacher ratio, and best of all better management than the private school I was associated with, so I decided to upgrade. Fuck you, harpy boss!

So now I have two tutoring gigs - private (pays the most) and professional (more stable and long-term), and my choice of three hotel gigs to fill my free time.

Anyone have any opinions on my options: Embassy Suites (part time, $10/hr, high class beach resort, lots of employees, free hospitality training programs, opportunity to actually use my foreign language skills), Hampton inn (full time, 8.75/hr, cross training for all jobs in the hotel, benefits after 90 days, history of promoting from within and lots of available management positions to fill, but not as high class and seems to have a high turnover rate), And Candlewood Suites (part time, more flexible hours, 9/hr, extended-stay hotel, more responsibilities, lesser known but nice brand name, management seems unreliable).

Which one has the hottest boss you can sleep with?

In seriousness, look for better hours - if you have 3 jobs (not sure the time commitment on the tutoring, but...), you want to at least be able to schedule them effectively.

Otherwise, I'll save some money to split a room with someone (I'd say the AndyDoors, but wouldn't sharing a room with a couple be embarrassing?).

"More fun" you mean.  Just join in.  It's a hetereosexual couple, so there's something for EVERYONE there.

Unless you like midgets.

Or hermaphrodites.

Or goats.

CONSTRUCTIVE POST:  I will share a hotel room with COOL people.  Will have to check to make sure those dates are good (new resident class starts then).

I really should post here more often...

Anyway, most of the time, I don't see movies I want to see, and get stuck seeing ones I have no desire to see...can't remember them all, but...

How to Train Your Dragon - Good overall.  Nice kids movie, and I like how there's a consequence at the end for the hero.  Makes it realistic.

Couples Retreat - Just...it's exactly what you'd expect.  The actors feel kind of wasted (seriously, Steve Carrell, Tommy Lee Jones...really feel like they could have done a lot more).  It's...not bad, but it's going to go exactly the way you think it will.

Birdemic - Hahahahahaha oh god this was awesomely awful.

Sex and the City - Like an extended episode of the show.  Which means it's good.  But...really, a movie?  Definitely feels like it was planned for the series finale, but just got made into a movie instead for more money.

Sex and the City 2 - Annnnnnnnnddddd this is why you don't go beyond the series finale (i.e., the first movie).  Just stretched way beyond what it should have been, and stupid, and I can definitely see why it was considered offensive at some points.  Also, Samantha is a terrible person and I wish she would have died of breast cancer (damnit, why couldn't if have been T4N3M1?!  Stupid lucky bitch..).  Even the movie's cover poster looks stupid.

Les Miserables - Holy shit.  Uh...wow.  This is probably the best adaptation of a musical to the movies I have ever seen...and...I honestly think it may be better.  It is excellent.  All the actors do great (seriously, BORAT can SING!?) - none of them are voice trained, but I think that helps - a few imperfections in the voices make the song so much more meaningful.  Some songs are cut (Dog Eat Dog...but who the fuck cares), some are moved around (I Dreamed a Dream and Do You Hear the People Sing come later) and some are shorted (Turning and Empty Chairs are combined into a song shorter than either of them originally were), but all of it WORKS.  My only real complaint is that there are a lot of close-ups.  Like, a lot - several scenes and songs (i.e., What Have I Done) are entirely close-ups.  It's not even a major complaint - it really lets you see the emotion better - but it would have been nice to see a bit more of the scenery (which is excellent).  Also, the title is still mis-leading - Anne Hathaway is miserable, but she bisexual at best.  Seriously, though, see this movie.  It is excellent, especially if you like theatre like me.

Eat, Pray, Love - I've talked about this before, but I saw it playing on TV the other day, and feel it needs to be re-iterated again: it sucks ass.  Cracked's Photoplasty says it best: http://www.cracked.com/photoplasty_370_tiny-changes-that-would-have-saved-terrible-movies_p21/#3

Really looking to go see Warm Bodies this weekend, and still need to see Wreck-it-Ralph

Need to vote, but Xander is quite competent...he's just really the only one in the Buffyverse without some type of special power/ability/skill (outside of being good at construction jobs).  He still managed to save the world several times, and has been proven to be easily underestimated, so he'd probably be able to do decently.  Not win, likely, but he's far from incompetent.

Would love to play, now my free time quantity is a bit better than it was...still not great, but if you guys have times you'll generally be on, I can try to make as many as I can (I'm still playing D3 and Torchlight 2, so...).

Will take a Witch, likely.

In honor of the DL's third favorite Canadian, now departed from us forever, we hold this memorial tournament on, as he would have wanted, a completely random occasion.

Honestly, I consider Ciato and Tide Canadians, so more like 5th to me.  Also, Doma has/had an awesome beard, so closer to 6th, honestly.  Beards are awesome.  Also, LAGTV are both Canadian, so we're at 8th now.

What I'd like from everyone is Five Characters.  Characters can be anything definable as a character, from any reasonable source.  Games, movies, books, etc.  Try to keep it fictional, or at least memetic.  For example, Stephen Colbert or Teddie Roosevelt would be okay, Barack Obama or Grefter not so much.

How is Obama not memetic?!

My List
Ebony Dark'ness Dementia Raven Way (My Immortal)
LAGTV (from...uh...Life's a Glitch TV >_>  Go Adam and Jeff!)
Gay Tony (Grand Theft Auto: The Ballad of Gay Tony)
Daniel Tosh (Tosh.0)
Kanye West (from...real life - hey, he's memetic!)

The only places that really seem to be interested in sponsoring VISAs right now are medical residencies, and even then, places seem a little loathe to do a lot of it.

This should make things happier:

*sigh*

I'm going to have to cancel.

I was planning to drive up Friday, but I can't.  Been hoping to get better over the last few days, but it won't happen fast enough.

Got a terrible case of bronchitis/pharyngitis/laryngitis and currently have no voice and an awful cough.  S'what I get for living with someone else who had the same thing a bit ago :).  I need to reserve whatever voice I have to call candidates for residency interviews on Friday, so...uh...sorry :(.  Maybe we can all get together some other time prior to DLCon.  Or just next year :(.  Again, really sorry - I wanted to see Tide and everyone else again (except Super and Meeple, of course), but alas.
