Final Fantasy 6 - A Complete Hack
« on: July 06, 2011, 01:53:09 AM »
With Megaupload taken down, I recommend using the Romhacking.net link. It should be the same file.

http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/650/

DOWNLOAD LINK

I would've attached it using the RPGDL thing, but it's way too big for that, so here is a Megaupload link. Remember to apply to Version 1.0 Of the game!

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=R2OBUV4Q

I'd been messing with hacking this game for ages, I remember posting custom monsters on Gamefaqs back when they didn't care about that kind of discussion. Anyway, I had always wanted to make a fully edited hack - but that requires a lot of effort, and the tools for, say, script editing were never simple. But then FF3USME got a script editor! So I and a friend worked on this together. We originally only planned on playing it between us and a few friends, but I thought it was pretty good so I decided to release it to the public at romhacking.net. This version is a bit newer then the one that is posted there - it's got some bug fixes and some minor balance changes (lol ChaosDrgns)

Anyway, what's changed? Gameplay, Character Sprites, Text. All of it is edited! You might not be a big fan of one of, say, the text, which is fine! You can ignore it pretty easily, and at least it isn't the same as the original script!

Anyway, about the text. I knew I couldn't write a good serious story without coming off as terribly corny, so I went the parody route. There ARE some serious parts to the story, it's not like, say, Awful Fantasy which is a joke a minute, but the script does not take itself seriously. At all. Some jokes are injokes, some are pretty stupid! But there is some stuff in there that *I* think is pretty funny, so hopefully you will too!

Sprites were all changed! I figured that this was a very big part of making this feel like more then just a "hack", and it was pretty difficult to get good looking sprites with the palette limitations you have. Especially since we found out about things like how you can't use the last four colours because the game changes them whenever they feel like! Still, this was mostly my friends work, and I was very happy with it! Some of them had a lot more effort spent on them then others, but I think they all have their own charm.

So, anyway, the gameplay. What's changed? Well...

MONSTERS
 - All bosses are changed. Some minorly (Vargas is only a little different) and some almost completely (Phunbaba, for example). The difficulty of the game is not absurdly high. It ramps up a bit near the end, but I was aiming for "slightly harder then the original."
 - Some enemies were changed. Some randoms were changed, some were slightly changed, some were left the same. For the most part, don't expect anything too exciting here.

MAGIC
 - Espers no longer teach magic.
 - Espers no longer give stat boosts on level up.
 - Summons are noticably stronger.
 - Magic is instead learned from equipped items. Only certain people can learn certain spells.

CHARACTERS
 - Characters have all been changed to "Classes". I expect you to rename them.

TERRA - WHITE MAGE (Male)
 - Fight
 - Health
 - Magic
 - Item

VIGOR: 36
SPEED: 31
STAMINA: 28
MAG. PWR: 43

Health sets Regen on all party members.
Learns all white Magic, in addition to pearl. One of two characters with natural magic. The only character with access to Life 2 and Life 3, which are very helpful.

LOCKE - DRAGOON (Female)
 - Fight
 - Jump
 - Magic
 - Item

VIGOR: 42
SPEED: 35
STAMINA: 39
MAG. PWR: 25

Can equip heavy armor. Learns lightning magic as well as a few support spells, but magic power is low. Special "Dragoon Helm" gotten late game makes Jump hit multiple times. Generally one of the highest damage dealers late game thanks to this, but lacks mid game.

EDGAR - RED MAGE (Male)
 - Fight
 - Steal
 - Magic
 - Item

VIGOR: 34
SPEED: 34
STAMINA: 34
MAG. PWR: 34

Can steal. Learns up to the level 2 spells in both damage and curing, as well as a variety of status spells. World of Ruin swords Tyrfing and Excalibur change Magic into X-Magic, making Red Mage the only X-Magic capable character. However, with X-Magic, you cannot summon. Magic is generally a better choice then physically attacking, but Excalibur's physical attacks can contend.

SABIN - MONK (Female)
 - Fight
 - Blitz
 - Magic
 - Item

VIGOR: 50
SPEED: 39
STAMINA: 47
MAG. PWR: 24

Somewhat similar to sabin. Higher base defense/attack, but doesn't have many weapons. Blitzes all have an element attached, and are all offensive. Learns some curing magic. Strongest weapon hits four times. Weapons all increase maximum HP, making her have one of the highest HP values on the team.

SHADOW - BLUE MAGE (Female)

 - Fight
 - Lore
 - Magic
 - Item

VIGOR: 32
SPEED: 37
STAMINA: 26
MAG. PWR: 38

A good number of Blue Magic spells are different then the original. They tend to have a high MP cost. People in towns give you hints as to where to learn them, and bosses cast a variety of them, so they are generally not too difficult to learn. Learns some basic offensive magic, as well.

Blue Magic is useful, Pearl Wind is another way to heal, and there are some good damaging and status spells in there as well.

CELES - BLACK MAGE (Female)
 - Fight
 - Morph
 - Magic
 - Item

VIGOR: 29
SPEED: 29
STAMINA: 25
MAG. PWR: 50

Has a lot of Magic Power, and learns all Black Magic. Morph can be used to jack stats up even further. Little variety, but lots of power. Lacks against enemies with elemental resistances until she learns Flare or Meteor.

CYAN - SAMURAI (Male)
 - Fight
 - SwdTech
 - Magic
 - Item

VIGOR: 45
SPEED: 33
STAMINA: 33
MAG. PWR: 26

All Katana are two handed. SwdTech has a strange variety of moves. Very high evasion. Learns spells such as Quartr and Imp, though they are learned quite early on. Evasion is quite high, but physical defense is fairly low. One of the oddest characters.

GAU - BEASTMASTER (Male)

 - Rage
 - Leap
 - Control
 - Item

VIGOR: 35
SPEED: 35
STAMINA: 36
MAG. PWR: 35

Control is very powerful, working on nearly all random enemies. Rage also has a good variety of strong rages, if you can find them. Attack power is fairly low, but can equip weapons.

SETZER - PIRATE (Male)

 - Capture
 - Slot
 - Tools
 - Item

VIGOR: 36
SPEED: 41
STAMINA: 42
MAG. PWR: 27

Strange variety of moves. Can do a bit of everything. Highest defensive capabilities in the game. Lagomorph is buffed in terms of healing to be decent! Tools are similar to the original game. Some are changed elementwise or to what status they inflict, so he can inflict slow or deal water damage.

MOG - DANCER (Female)
 - Fight
 - Dance
 - Magic
 - Item

VIGOR: 31
SPEED: 48
STAMINA: 22
MAG. PWR: 38

Strong Ice magic is available, very capable black magic user. Dance is generally stronger early game, like the original mog. High speed and evasions, some equipment grants Auto-Image. Weapons are usable from the back row.

STRAGO - NINJA (Male)
 - Fight
 - Throw
 - Magic
 - Item

VIGOR: 36
SPEED: 48
STAMINA: 30
MAG. PWR: 34

Dual-wields ninja swords. Throw does lots of damage as well. Pitifully low defenses. Has fairly powerful Fire Magic. Basically, he has a lot of offense, with almost no defense besides Evasion. Lategame, one of the most reliable damage dealers, because no enemy will be able to resist the damage he deals out.

RELM - KNIGHT (Female)
 - Fight
 - Runic
 - Magic
 - Item

VIGOR: 44
SPEED: 36
STAMINA: 44
MAG. PWR: 33

Wields Swords or Knightswords. Knightswords tend to auto-grant Safe or Shell. Auto-covers allies with low HP. Learns most white magic (Up to Cure3) but not Life 2 or 3. Runic can be handy, as well, but her only means of dealilng damage is with the Fight command, so she may have to be in the front row.

UMARO - BERSERKER (???)

VIGOR: 67
SPEED: 42
STAMINA: 58
MAG. PWR: 46

Essentially Umaro+. Is automatically berserked with an accessory, accessories buff this character a lot. Honestly found the Berserker tough to balance!

GOGO - MIMIC (???)

VIGOR: 24
SPEED: 27
STAMINA: 21
MAG. PWR: 21

This is pretty much Gogo with some modified stats/equipment usage. Still, in a game where characters don't have as much variety, this is very useful.

AL (Replaces Banon)

 - Fight
 - Shock
 - Mimic
 - Item

VIGOR: 105
SPEED: 103
STAMINA: 98
MAG. PWR: 101

Al is a pretty good character. He's also the optional superboss! He's beatable, but very challenging.

EXILE (Replaces Leo)

 - Fight
 - Item

VIGOR: 52
SPEED: 38
STAMINA: 41
MAG. PWR: 36

ITEMS
 - All items are changed, with the exception of some relics.
 - Items teach spells. You can check this for non-weapons by going into the menu. It's a bit of a pain, though.
 - Balance is different then the original FF6!
 - Some relics are removed (Gem Box, Genji Glove, Offering, Gauntlet) and have been replaced with other things.

ETC
 - All rages are changed, they all have two attacks rather then Fight and an attack.
 - Chupon only shows up for one fight in the colosseum - everything else can be wagered for something!
 - There are a couple optional superbosses lying around. Those are always fun!

Anyway, if you're interested, I've attached it below! I'll still probably be a mostly lurker who posts once in a while, but I'm interested in hearing any comments that you might have, and I'll respond! Thanks for taking the time to read this wall of text. There's also a few screenshots below. So if you're not sick of playing FF6 Hacks yet, play this one!

Looks cool, man! Though notably, your beastmaster sprite link is broken ;_;

Just at a glance, I think the Dancer and Blue Mage sprites could really use an update. You might want to check out the latest selection at FF6hacking and use those with some palette changes. In particular, I know that there's a Dancer sprite already (based on the actual FF6 Dancer/Showgirl sprite) that you could use. Blue Mage might be a little harder, but conceivably you could use any of the mage-ish female sprites they have and change the palette to have lots of blue.

The rest of the sprites look pretty good, but you might consider a new version with some updated sprites.

MC50, is this more or less complete or are you planning to develop it further?

The games complete. I made it a fair while ago, and I've made a fair number of changes to it since then, including changing Wrexsoul significantly (He was basically the same), making new attacks for the three statues, and a lot of typo fixes (There's probably still some around, but I've got most of them).

I'm not going to say I'm not going to touch it again, but I'm pretty happy with where it is now.

Anyway, I can see complaining about Dancer - She originally had an outline, but I thought it looked really jarring with the white hair, it looked... too much like an outline! That being said, it's probably one of the worse sprites.

Sprites that took the longest to make were...

Black Mage
Mimic

Sprites that took the least amount of time included

Samurai
Berserker

Now, I perfectly understand talking about Dancer, because I won't deny that it's an odd sprite, but I actually thought Blue Mage was one of the better ones? It's based off the FF Tactics Advance Blue Mage, actually, just wondering what you thought was wrong with it? I seen your sprites and they're really good so obviously you know what you're doing!

But yeah, the games complete, barring any major balance oversights or huge typos. I know you've gotten a lot of FF6 hacks, but if anyone wants to play it, I'd like to hear what you think!

EDIT: Also, I know the Face Pics are bad >_>, but they're at least mostly in a consistent style!

For the Portraits, it's notable that you -could- easily snag the art from FFTA/2 or FF11 or any various fanartists interpretations to get a consistant style. Photoshop is good for sizing, recoloring, and clearing backgrounds for such things.

As for the Blue Mage, she has a flat head. If it weren't for her hat, it would look like her skull stopped at her eyebrows. Dancer has the same problem. I suspect Pirate has a similar problem, but I've not see the full sprite for that one and it looks passable in the preview image you have there. Ninja could also stand to have a second shade of Red in there somewhere if you've got room on his Palette.

Apart from that though, you've actually got a nice range of really good to passable sprites.

Updated the Main Post with spell changes, as well as who can learn what spells! Read if you're interested.

As an aside, I'm thinking of doing a stat topic at some point! I was looking at the FF6 and Meeple Fantasy 6 topics, how did you do the damage calculations? Is there a formula that you can use? I'd like to do it the same way those were done, so if I knew what you used, that'd be great!

Thanks!

FF6 has a comprehensive algorithm FAQ, so simply following that and applying the appropriate values to the formula is all that needs to be done.

FF3usMe can be used to look up anything else it has, be it HP scores (which unless there's equipment shenanigans, usually ends up "too similar to bother listing"), spell values, etc.

Idle balance point - unless the spells have been changed (or there is waaaay more uniform resistance to the big three elements), Fire/Ice/Bolt 3 are more useful spells than Meteor and Flare by quite a bit, so them being learned so much earlier feels off. (Although at least Meteor is learned via an item?)

(I also don't think spells learned at Level 45+ will ever be relevant to me in FF6, though some people might enjoy grinding for 'em. Granted, I am fine with Ultima being irrelevant, at least!)

Otherwise, looks pretty interesting!

Alright, I think I've got the hang of the damage calculation thing.
One thing, though, what did you use for average enemy Defense/Magic Defense? Or does it really matter?

In my playtesting, I usually ended up in the low 40's by the end of the game, so you're probably right that Flare is a bit too high. Enemy EXP in the last couple dungeons has increased a lot, but I don't think it'll make THAT big a difference. Probably more around 40 would be good. I found Flare useful, due not so much to more resistances, but higher enemy MDEF in general.

Yeah, I'm not expecting anyone to grind for Ultima. But if they want to they can!

I'll probably update the main post with an equipment list later. When I do, I'll post.

Defenses I used are 127.  Generally, enemy defenses range from 100 to 150, with physical being closer to 100 and Magical being closer to 150, so 127 is just easier to use for middle ground purposes.

Updated with a weapon list! Also fixed the formatting a little on some of the earlier stuff.

Armor will probably be later on.

I just downloaded the hack and I am stuck at the Whelk boss.  It says to attack his shell and he is weak against lightning, but the only skill I have is tek laser which does 1 damage at a time.  How do I beat it?  I really want to try this hack out
