Lich (OB) vs Serph (DDS1)- Just a strong kneejerk here. Serph is damn good, but Lich is Lich.
Cidolfas Orlandu (FFT) vs Lady Blackpearl (LoM)- Meter filling is godly, but it's also super late in the game and Blackpearl is unremarkable besides for that.
Deis (BoF2) vs Zerase (S5)- Deis is just too good later on. Fight of the division for usre.

Heavy:

Lilka Eleniak (WA2) vs Arnaud G. Vasquez (WA4)- Kneejerk.
Jerin (Lufia 1) vs Hiro (Lunar:EBC)- Jerin had MT damage, attack magic, and mirror. Hiro's damage is good but Jean rivals him for most of the game at the least.
Princess Toadstool (SMRPG) vs Rufus (VP2)- Rufus had some lag periods.
Ephraim (FE8) vs Tidus (FFX)- Ephraim is silly powerful.

Middle:

Rei (BoF3) vs Sabin Rene Figaro (FF6)- Rei's super fast and has some offense on the side. Sabin is just there.
Aika (SoA) vs Bow (BoF2)- Delta shield+MP restoration. Aika for champ.
Luc (S2) vs Jochaim Valentine (SH2)- Luc isn't as nasty as Zerase is in S5, but... mage with three rune slots early and he makes good use of wind and darkness both.  Jochaim felt unremarkable.

Light:

Spar (BoF2) vs Moulder (FE8)- Spar felt like the worst PC in the game. Moulder at least can heal.
Gilder (SoA) vs Karyl Sheeden (ToD)- Karyl is Onix in my books; he has no skillset for 95% of the game and only joins super late. He's also inferior to most of his competition. Gilder's at least durable.

Onix:

Kongol (LoD) vs Ornan (S4)- Ornan still sucks.
Dragon Master (OB) vs Bilcock (Brig)- Bilcock is like a .5/10 PC. Not only is he terrible from start to end, he is massively underleveled and in a terrible job path. He has less rune at L30 than Lance has at L5 and his low rune area hurts too. Dragon Master requires a rare item to transform, super average alignment (A massive pain in the ass to do), and transforms at level fucking 22. The other tier 3 classes appear at level 14-15. On top of that he has Knight stats, useless attacks, and his recruiting/leader niche is made redundant by the  Dragoons. Did I mention they're fucking expensive to summon as wlel?
Clive (RS) vs Koroku (S3)- Clive is useful for a dungeon, suikodog is suikodog.
Edward Damcyan (FF4o) vs Umaro (FF6)- Edward is Rydia without magic.

Lich (OB) vs Serph (DDS1) - Leaning Serph, only due to being far more present. Swayable either way. Lich being potentially late/endgame does not fill me with joy.
Cidolfas Orlandu (FFT) vs Lady Blackpearl (LoM) - Both very late... in their own storylines. Lady Blackpearl can be used in other storylines before going to the Mana Tree, Cid... Beowulf sidequest, Deep Dungeon. Lady Blackpearl breaks things harder and has a niche no matter what, Orlandu may not see use if you prefer your own raised-up units... eh, arguments either way (FFT difficulty makes Orlandu more useful in that regard, but... feh, whatevs.)
Deis (BoF2) vs Zerase (S5) - Forced more often, excels more ingame. Mind, very close match.

Heavy:

Lilka Eleniak (WA2) vs Arnaud G. Vasquez (WA4) - Felt more indisposable.
Jerin (Lufia 1) vs Hiro (Lunar:EBC) - Leaning Jerin. Hiro's good and carries Crests well, but... leaning Jerin.
Ephraim (FE8) vs Tidus (FFX) - Breaks game hard.

Middle:

Rei (BoF3) vs Sabin Rene Figaro (FF6) - ...uuuuuhhhhhhh

Spar (BoF2) vs Moulder (FE8) - Short time period where he's your only healer > completely extraneous except for map ability.
Cielo (DDS1) vs Junpei Iori (Pers3) - Slaighter in this direction. DDS2 Cielo included, slaughter in the other direction, but... Junpei is used earlygame and provides competent offense/okay fire magic. Cielo... forced for a dungeon and is decently often an active hindrance.

Kongol (LoD) vs Ornan (S4) - Suikoscrub vs. smaller cast character.
Edward Damcyan (FF4) vs Umaro (FF6) - Present for less time, worse stats.

Cidolfas Orlandu (FFT) vs Lady Blackpearl (LoM): Blackpearl is awesome for a LoM support character, but lack of control limits how high that type can get I suppose.
Deis (BoF2) vs Zerase (S5): Oh wow, good fight. Sorta want to go with Zerase because she takes less effort to be as dominant as she is; Deis is a bit less impressive if you miss her for a bit. Otherwise both are crazy-strong mages who got some rivals later but are probably the best at magical mayhem even then.

Heavy:

Lilka Eleniak (WA2) vs Arnaud G. Vasquez (WA4): Lilka needed MT healing outside of Mystic (with the least berry-filled game in the series) to compete here. Arnaud is too good at keeping enemies under control.
Princess Toadstool (SMRPG) vs Rufus (VP2): Rufus is Just Another Fighter, albeit a good one. Toadstool has the godly Group Hug and some other perks. Rena vs. Lenneth, Heavy edition.
Ephraim (FE8) vs Tidus (FFX): Eph is stupidly broken with two stupidly broken weapons. Possibly the best combat PC in the entire series.

Middle:

Rei (BoF3) vs Sabin Rene Figaro (FF6): I was having trouble deciding, then I remembered the Chain formation, which makes Rei's speed super-valuable.
Luc (S2) vs Jochaim Valentine (SH2): Luc has good speed, good magic, and good affinities. He's frail and S2 isn't as magic-friendly as S5, but otherwise there are similarities between him and Zerase. Zerase Jr. is nasty in Middle.

Light:

Spar (BoF2) vs Moulder (FE8): I suppose.
Emma Hetfeld (ACF) vs Massimo (MMXCM): Massimo's not that bad, HP has uses as does the Action Trigger. Emma.... uh... Great Booster I guess but bleh the stats.

Cidolfas Orlandu (FFT) vs Lady Blackpearl (LoM) - *glosses over Tai's post*. Oh good point. I forgot that Blackpearl can be brought along other sidequests and is still the best NPC to bring along if you're given the choice. Closer than I kneejerk'd since Orlandu when he joins also doesn't have as much in terms of job levels and the Excalibur IS transferable (while instantly metre filling is not). Still, Lady Blackpearl being uncontrollable despite having some really good skills hurts here. And her joining requirements are certainly not as obvious. Think Orlandu still manages to edge out - though it's certainly a decent match.

Heavy:

Lilka Eleniak (WA2) vs Arnaud G. Vasquez (WA4) - Not close at all. Lilka's healing doesn't manage to stay on the same level in anyway as Arnaud's ability to control battles and stay as the group's most durable PC. She will need additional level of damage or as NEB mention'd more MT healing in order to decently stand a chance. The fact that Arnaud can win most battles by himself without much trouble is a testament to how good he is.
Princess Toadstool (SMRPG) vs Rufus (VP2) - This one's much closer though. Rufus is pretty awesome, but he doesn't really start standing out from the rest of the pack until the Seraphic Gate, and even then, he shares that title with the Seraphic Seven. Basically his stupidly good mult normals are absent for a good portion of the game, and he's replacable with another decent archer before then (Hi Phyress!). Toadstool meanwhile has cheap MT healing (and the only person who does!) when she joins and is never lacking so far behind in damage compared to everyone else. Yeah.
Ephraim (FE8) vs Tidus (FFX) - Ephraim one mans puny FE8 Normal mode.

Light:
Emma Hetfeld (ACF) vs Massimo (MMXCM) - Easy enough for me. Massimo joins earlier, has use in dungeons 2-3 for certain and his HP and Action Trigger are worthwhile to use. Emma is a project character which requires tons of effort to get decently good skills for, dies to a sneeze and her only advantage is saving you a couple of turns by casting Great Booster instead of Cecilia support buff swarm. You might as well go for Lock on Active if you really want to shave turn counts down.

Vasquez (WA4) - So if you're getting rid of WA4 party members, obviously Jude goes first.  After that...  I'd have to say it's definitely Yulie.  She's got good damage but it blows your FP to use it, she's frail, and item-healing isn't bad in WA4.  Arnaud and Raquel are definitely the most valuable elements in the team - Raquel for damage, Arnaud for unparalleled support.  The combo of Shut Out / Slow Down is just crucial for a bunch of boss fights.  Lilka...  is great, yes, but hardly crucial?  I'd rather have Tim's healing in general, and for damage I'd rather have Brad or Kanon.  Lilka's a good all-rounder but not nearly as crucial to the WA2 team's gameplan as Arnaud is to WA4's.

Rei (BoF3) vs Sabin Rene Figaro (FF6)- Oooh.  Neat match.  Both occupy a strange space in which I definitely found them quite good in game and they made my final parties, but have clear black marks (Sabin's the lull between when Espers show up and Bum Rush, Rei's the berserk qualities of Weretiger) and generally are probably technically sub-optimal.  Hm.  I think I lean Rei here, the competition is less fierce there.

Aika (SoA) vs Bow (BoF2)- Aika in Middle?  With Delta Shield practically necessary and Lambda Burst maiming randoms?  I'm not sure who to blame, but that's sure as heck not how I rated her.
Luc (S2) vs Jochaim Valentine (SH2)- Luc's basically your first power mage, and the only one you're guaranteed to get, and Suikoden II is definitely friendly to them.  Joachim's solid but yeah.

Light:

Ephraim (FE8) vs Tidus (FFX) - Tidus could go any way. Heck, Yuna can physical for 12k damage so Tidus is just "I like how he looks"... and I didn't even do that. Kimahri > Tidus afaic. Ephraim, however... Can probably solo Hard Mode? Mmmm, should test.

Lilka Eleniak (WA2) vs Arnaud G. Vasquez (WA4) - Kneejerking that Cecilia-lite is better than 'Good boss-fight support'. I never found a use for Arnaud during randoms.
Jerin (Lufia 1) vs Hiro (Lunar:EBC) - Hiro's more replacable... if you could replace people in either game.
Princess Toadstool (SMRPG) vs Rufus (VP2) - MT Healing is hard niche to overcome, though Rufus is close. His only problem is that that other Archers exist and can fill his role if necessary (though I'd generally just use all of them).

Middle:

Rei (BoF3) vs Sabin Rene Figaro (FF6) - Ryu3 really does make the rest of his cast lok worthless, but Rei's probably #2 for me. Sabin is good enough, but he lags most of the time. Good match, could have probably been Heavy.
Ziggy (XS1) vs Arche Klein (ToP) - Good in-game for completely different reasons than her DL self. Random slayer beats out Ziggy. Additionally, she tends to get slightly better with each new version of the game - faster casting, more mobile/evasive, better endgame spells and whatnot.
Aika (SoA) vs Bow (BoF2) - Aika might swing Godlike.
Luc (S2) vs Jochaim Valentine (SH2)  - Luc is good for Middle. Might struggle in Heavy. Joachim is... average. Yuri has a tendency to do this to people.

Godlike:

Rolf Landale (PS2) vs Sage (FF3NES): EDIT: I fail at reading!  Unlike the DQ3 Sage which gets overhyped cause people conveniently ignore all its issues, FF3NES Sage is absurd.  Still, I give Rolf the nod on grounds that Rolf is a crutch practically the entire game, while the Sage is only available for Sylx and the World of Darkness; while incredibly useful there, I can only give someone around for such a brief period so much credit.
Lich (OB) vs Serph (DDS1): Serph is good in that "Game best PC" kind of way, but isn't overpowered or anything.  A Lich, meanwhile, is single handedly more powerful than entire OB units, which says something.  One of these guys and your unit never has an excuse to lose fights ever.  Not to mention it can recruit higher class Undead, which is a nice bonus.
Cidolfas Orlandu (FFT) vs Lady Blackpearl (LoM): In the end, FFT is a harder game than LoM, and Orlandu is good fall back character if you have poorly raised PCs; I had an ultra basic PC in LoM, so not only was the AUTO TECH thing kind of meaningless for me, but the game's utter failure of difficulty made me not care and I mostly chose Blackpearl cause her AI wasn't totally trash like half the PCs <_<
Deis (BoF2) vs Zerase (S5): Good fight, but Deis can join ridiculously early with a ridiculous level edge and that awesome spellset, gotta give it to her.

Heavy:

Lilka Eleniak (WA2) vs Arnaud G. Vasquez (WA4): Lilka honestly I enver found THAT impressive, where as Arnaud would be the game MVP if Raquel wasn't so disgusting.
Jerin (Lufia 1) vs Hiro (Lunar:EBC): Jerin fails to stand out for most of the game, being "Just another Mage", and Magic was pretty meh for damage in Lufia 1.  Hiro was a consistent source of cheap damage, and had good durability and speed on top of that.
Princess Toadstool (SMRPG) vs Rufus (VP2): Primary Healer with few shortcomings > Pure Fighter, if an effective, niche one.
Ephraim (FE8) vs Tidus (FFX): Tidus is good, but not AMAZING.  Ephraim, meanwhile, should be in Godlike for In Game use.

Middle:

Rei (BoF3) vs Sabin Rene Figaro (FF6): Sabin's offense is often overstated, for all that its never BAD (Floating Continent aside where he's...actually one of your lower damaging PCs) Rei's one of your best boss fighters in the 2nd half, Chain Formation makes his speed matter that much more, and he's got Pilfer which can get you a lot of nice things like Wisdom Fruits/Seeds.
Ziggy (XS1) vs Arche Klein (ToP):  IN the end, I compared the other options available in both games; Ziggy is more replacable since all he really had was durability.  Arche...in original, her competition involved basically Chester (assuming Klarth/Mint were used) who really sucks for 95% of the time, let alone is underleveled, and in remake, the Improved Chester and Suzu, the latter is fail, former is...actually not bad!  Still, one PC who rivals her for that slot (or 2 PCs for one of two Slots, i should say, since Klarth isn't a given) is better than being replacable by most of the cast, so...
Aika (SoA) vs Bow (BoF2):  I will note, however, that hyping AIka based on MP HEALING is one of the most laughable, failure things I can see.  You never run out of MP in SoA, and using MP actually hurts Aika's use, not helps, since suddenly Fina can do what Aika can do only better (Aika failed to OHKO things with stuff like Pyres, Fina did not, so no, the Higher Speed is not an advantage here)  Combine this with how deep your MP resources are and how easy it is to heal MP normally, that's gotta be one of the most laughable reasons to hype Aika.  no, Aika's use is Delta Shield, plain and simple, which while only really good on bosses and a few specific randoms, does place her above Bow.
Luc (S2) vs Jochaim Valentine (SH2): Joachim's good but generic, Luc's one of the best mages in S2 which stands out quite a bit, especially in a cast that size.

Light:

Spar (BoF2) vs Moulder (FE8): Spar's entirely replacable by either Deis, Medicates or Medusa Shields, since Attack Up is quite literally the only thing he has going for him...and he joins underleveled and has no damage unless you give him Missile!  Moulder at least is a healer and has the Bishop form for late game.
Gilder (SoA) vs Karyl Sheeden (ToD): Karyl fails, Gilder at least has Gunslinger which is cool stuff for randoms, and is a forced PC at times, meaning he takes the role of "Warm Body" which is certainly better than a Blank Space.  Karyl is always in competition with at least 3 other PCs, meaning he pretty much is never being used.
Emma Hetfeld (ACF) vs Massimo (MMXCM): Really, this was said by everyone else.  Massimo acts as a Warm Body at first who happens to have excellent HP, then becomes an extra HP Tank with a good Action Trigger.  Emma joins late, has game worst stats across the board and is a genuine liability because of this...and her only real noteworthy move is Great Booster.
Cielo (DDS1) vs Junpei Iori (Pers3): Can't vote.: Can't vote.

Onix:- Vote for the worst of the two in this division.

Kongol (LoD) vs Ornan (S4): Kongol is usable, Ornan practically is not.
Dragon Master (OB) vs Bilcock (Brig): Being useless in Brig means at worst "You're quest bait", so they're still contributing in that manner.  Dragon Master...yeah, super more or less covered this.
Clive (RS) vs Koroku (S3): Clive is your first PC to join, and has the early game forced section; that's enough to put him above a useless Suikodog.
Edward Damcyan (FF4o) vs Umaro (FF6): Umaro, if nothing else, has NMG Fanatics Tower uses, and is a quick gain whose immune to the big 3 elements, and lets you use Swordtechs a little easier!!!  Edward has no skillset but random Status, during the EASIEST SECTION OF THE GAME (Cecil's absurdedly overpowered here, both defensively and offensively), and has lower HP than Rydia, so he's not even good as a warmbody.  But wait, that's not all! He also has AUTO HIDE, which means his HP, in practice is even lower, cause Auto Hide = He never acts if he's in Near Fatal = YOU'RE FUCKED IF EVERYONE ELSE SOMEHOW DIES.

...oh yeah, Umaro's also better than Relm in an NMG, meaning he'll make the Kefka's Tower cut if you let Shadow die or something <.< (you could make a case for him beating out Cyan too for that matter.)

Deis (BoF2) vs Zerase (S5): meh, S5 is a breeding ground of overpowered PCs. There's only one Deis.

Heavy:

Ephraim (FE8) vs Tidus (FFX)

Middle:

Rei (BoF3) vs Sabin Rene Figaro (FF6)
Aika (SoA) vs Bow (BoF2): Godly random cleaner with a trump card for a few superbosses > Bow, who is decent but not... in that league.
Luc (S2) vs Jochaim Valentine (SH2): Luc's pretty great too. Joachim... meh.

Clive(RS) vs Koroku(S3)- Clive can at least heal
Edward (FF4o) vs Umaro (FF6)- I actually found Edwards status harps to work more often in the original, especially the confusion one. Umaro is never forced at all.
